We all get them: stupid email forwards. Misguided (or just plain idiotic) friends, relatives and coworkers forward us stuff that promises to be “hilarious” or “amazing,” when it’s actually so damn stupid, you want to reach through the computer and strangle them for sending it to you. These emails belong in the Stupid Email Hall of Fame. This week’s installment came from our frequent contributor, my former co-worker:
SOCIAL SECURITY CHANGES
It does not matter if you personally like or dislike Obama. You need to sign this petition and flood his e-mail box with e-mails that tell him that, even if the House passes this bill, he needs to veto it. It is already impossible to live on Social Security alone. If the government gives benefits to ‘illegal’ aliens who have never contributed, where does that leave those of us who have paid into Social Security all our working lives?
As stated below, the Senate voted this week to allow ‘illegal’ aliens access to Social Security benefits.
Attached is an opportunity to sign a petition that requires citizenship for eligibility to that social service.
Instructions are below. If you don’t forward the petition and just stop it, we will lose all these names.
If you do not want to sign it, please just forward it to everyone you know.
To add your name, click on ‘forward’. Address it to all of your email correspondents, add your name to the list and send it on.
When the petition hits 1,000, send it to email@example.com
PETITION for President Obama:
Dear Mr. President:
We, the undersigned, protest the bill that the Senate voted on recently which would allow illegal aliens to access our Social Security. We demand that you and all Congressional representatives require citizenship as a pre-requisite for social services in the UNITED STATES!
We further demand that there not be any amnesty give n to illegal aliens, NO free services, no funding, no payments to and for illegal immigrants <mailto:firstname.lastname@example.org%3E>
*This was followed by a list of about 150 idiots who believe signing an internet petition sent to them in an email forward is a good way to have their voices heard. Smaht!
According to Snopes, this one is wrong and stupid in so many ways. First of all, it began circulating in 2006, and was first directed at President Bush. Apparently, some dipshit inserted President Obama’s name once he got elected, and sent it out to everyone he knew.
Second, the bill they state as being voted on “this week” was actually in May 2006. And the senate never passed a bill giving social security benefits to illegal immigrants. In fact, the legislation in question at that time was a bill that would have prohibited former illegals who’d since been granted citizenship from being granted credit from payments previously made into the social security system.
Third, email petitions are a terrible, illegitimate way to get anything done. Sending these petitions out as forwards ensures you’ll get thousands of duplicate names, and there’s no guarantee it will ever actually get sent to the appropriate recipient. There’s also the matter of having no way to verify the signatures as legitimate, therefore making them completely useless. Also, in this particular petition, it says to send it to a general comments email at the White House, which is not likely to garner any kind of response. If a person has a problem with a particular piece of legislation, they should contact someone in the legislative branch of the government, perhaps their senator or congressman, in order to truly have their voice heard.
Have you received something like this? Or does this email pale in comparison to some of the stupid crap you’ve received? If so, forward those dumb emails to email@example.com. We’ll mock and debunk (if necessary) these stupid emails every Wednesday.
