Etta v. Beyonce

ettabeyoncebrawl1It’s on y’all! At a recent Seattle concert, music legend Etta James said:

“You know, your president, the one with the big ears — he ain’t my president — had that woman singing for him at his inauguration. She’s going to get her ass whooped … Beyonce … I can’t stand Beyonce.”

OK, how much would you pay to see Etta James whoop Beyonce’s ass? Classic!

  2. Team Etta all the way!!

  3. I knew she would say something eventually. I couldn’t imagine Etta sitting by and letting Beyonce shred her song like that. Per-lease. There is no comparison.

When Etta sings live, she has no filter. I swear to god she licked her microphone when I saw her at Carnegie Hall. She’s so fucking awesome.

  4. @The Mayor of Bethville: You know, I was really surprised she was the one to get up there and sing that song. I think she did as well as she could (I am not a fan of Beyonce—she’s a mediocre singer at best), but why not get the real thing if the singer’s alive and kicking? Especially when you had another legend sing at the actual ceremony. It just doesn’t make sense to me.

I want to see Etta live one day. She’s so badass and I love her.

  5. @dz: My bigger issue is why she was chosen to portray Etta James in Cadillac to begin with. People who are true Etta James fans and people who are Beyonce fans are not one and the same. Therefore, putting a terribly mediocre pop culture icon in such a difficult role seemed very, very lazy to me. They could have found some no-name actress with an amazing voice. But it seemed that box office returns were more important.

Also, what you said. But there might have been a physical issue involved with her not performing at the inauguration ball. Etta isn’t really able to stand for long periods of time. Plus, she definitely says things and does things on stage that might not be appropriate for something so…presidential.

  6. @The Mayor of Bethville: I was livid when I found out they gave Beyonce that role. She had no business playing someone so talented and troubled. I haven’t seen the movie, but I’ve no doubt there’s not a shred of authenticity in her performance. Playing the Diana Ross character in “Dreamgirls?” Yes. She was born to play that role because Diana was basically the Beyonce of her time. But Etta James? Hell no!

Also, I think she’s kind of a sucky actress. She always sounds the same to me, like she’s reading lines. There’s no emotion behind it.

  7. I can’t speak to Beyonce’s acting skills, but I have read good reviews of her performance in Cadillac Records, for whatever that’s worth.

I agree that Etta should have been given the first go at it, but I don’t think it’s a complete and utter travesty for Beyonce to sing it, and I’m wondering if Etta has some other issues with Obama. Based on her “he’s not my president” comment, it seems like something else is going on.

And I’m no big fan of Beyonce, either. For what it’s worth.

  10. The president must not be her president because he did not ask Etta to sing the song of her career. I would prob be pissed also.

  12. I’m late to this but when I saw it I just about yelled “team Etta!”…how could they have Beyonce sing a ridiculously famous song by a singer WHO IS STILL ALIVE AND PERFORMING??? Doesn’t make sense. Pick another song or have the original.

  13. sounds like Etta might be jealous of Beyonce’s face time with the new Prez

  14. i dont get it. once a song is published, it is out in the open. it’s not the first of etta’s songs that has been covered. a LOT of songs come in different versions.

so president obama asked beyonce to sing.beyonce did a beautiful job, and she did mention it was not her song and that she admires etta a lot.. etta reacted poorly on this one, she ridiculed herself, only to then say it was a “joke”. for an artist, a legend, someone young artists like beyonce look up to, she is disappointing.
